Baby Showers
Brahms Lullabye
Searching for a name?
Ideas 1) Guess the Baby's GenderThis one works only if the parents haven't already disclosed the information. Ask each guest to write their prediction down on a slip of paper, along with the reason for their conclusion. Have the mother read the answers out loud, then announce the baby's true gender to the group. 2) Concentration Fill a basket with about 20 different baby items, including a baby bottle, diaper pins, an eyedropper, thermometer, teething rings, rattle, pacifier, etc. Give each guest a long glance into the basket, then take it out of the room. Whoever writes down the most items from memory wins the game. 3) Decorating Onesies Everyone brings a plain white onesie to the party (a onesie is a baby's T-shirt which snaps between the legs). Provide decorating materials (the kind that won't wash off), such as puff paints, colored markers, and decorative stamps so everyone can decorate a onesie for the baby. 4) This is Your (Baby's) Life Pass out index cards, each with a different blank for guests to fill in, such as "favorite food," "weight," and "occupation." Collect the cards, shuffle them, and pass them out again. Gather guests into a circle and have them take turns reading their cards out loud as predictions for the baby's life. 5) Sing it, Baby! Everyone writes down as many song titles as they can think of that include the word "baby" (as in, "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Ooh, Baby Baby"). Guests take turns reading or singing their answers out loud. The person with the most song titles is the winner. 6) Name that Baby Food Take the labels off baby food jars and number the lids to keep track of the names. Put a dollop of each variety on a plate in front of its jar. Everyone tries to guess the flavor of the baby food, by color, texture, or, for the more adventurous types, taste. The person with the most correct answers wins. 7) Ring Around the Mommy Using a BIG ball of yarn, each person cuts a length that she thinks will fit around the mother's waist at its widest point. They must eyeball it and aren't allowed to try it around their own waists first. Everybody gets to try their cut piece of yarn around the mother's waist and the one that fits the closest wins the prize. 8) Date of Arrival Pool Everyone pitches in five or ten dollars and makes a guess as to the time and date of baby's arrival. The closest one wins the whole pot. (Some especially competitive mothers have been known to push a little harder in order to throw the outcome and give baby an early cache for college.) 9) Tic-Tock, Where's the Clock? This one takes a little planning. Borrow as many alarm clocks as you'll have guests, then hide them with each guest's present around your house. Set each alarm to go off at five or ten minute intervals. When an alarm rings, the mother-to-be must go find it and the corresponding present, which she then opens 10) Steal the Pacifier Make necklaces (one for each guest) by attaching a long piece of ribbon to a baby pacifier. When each person arrives, put a necklace over her head. If anyone hears another guest say the word, "baby," they get to steal that person's necklace. Whoever collects the most necklaces by the end of the shower wins. Top 10 Baby Shower Gifts 1) Make a decorative family tree, starting with the baby's great grandparents on down. (This will require a little research.) Leave a blank space for the new arrival's name and birth date2) Design a quilt with hand-written messages from friends and family in each square. Send squares with the invitations and have them returned to the quilter several weeks ahead of time. 3) Put together a card file of handy child rearing tips for the parents-to-be. Include a few cards with each invitation for guests to fill in and bring to the shower. 4) Fill a ceramic wash basin with shampoo, baby powder, gentle soap, lotion, and tiny nail clippers for the baby. 5) Prepare a homemade coupon booklet for services like baby-sitting, running errands, house cleaning, meal preparation, and drop-off daycare. 6) Crochet a baby blanket, leaving a space where the baby's name and birth date can be added at a later date. 7) Give the baby a portrait studio gift certificate, along with a note asking him to bring his new parents along for the photo shoot. 8) Assemble a Romantic Night Kit for the parents to enjoy after the baby's six week check-up. Include massage oil, scented candles, a bottle of champagne (or sparkling grape juice), and two glasses. 9) Create a First Year Celebration Scrapbook with theme pages for the baby's day of birth, christening, and holidays, in order of occurrence. Include milestone events like "first tooth," "first doctor's visit," and "first parties attended." End the album with a first birthday page. 10) Help the new parents record the wonders of having a new baby with a beautiful journal, a set of pens, and some pretty baby theme stickers.
