Joey's Clips 'n Tips

(or Joey's Advice Column)

Clip:

A cat shares a striking trait with a camel and giraffe.  The cat, camel and giraffe move their front and hind legs on one side and then the front and hind legs on the other side.  When other animals move, they move the front leg on one side and the hind leg on the other side together, followed by the other two diagonally opposed legs.  *Whew*  Did you get all that???

The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days of yore when the engines were pulled by horses.  The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases.

Tip:

Animals need about two times more water than food.  Fresh, clean water should always be available to pets.  Left standing, water goes stale and loses its nutrients.  Also, a water bowl needs to be cleaned daily to prevent germ buildup.

OBLIGATION

They cannot ask for kindness or for mercy plead,
Yet cruel is our blindness which does not see their need.
World-over, town or city, god trusts us with this task;
To give our love and pity to those who cannot ask.

A Puppy's Promise

I'm sorry I wet on the rug and
chewed your slippers up.
But what do you expect from me?
I'm just a little pup.
If you take the time to train me,
Then the things that I could do,
Would make you very proud
That I belong to you!

Tip:

"Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea."

         A Stump For A Tail

You can't buy loyalty, they say
I bought it though, the other day;
You can't buy friendship, tried and true,
Well just the same, I bought that too.
I made my bid, and on the spot,
bought love and faith and a whole job lot
 of happiness,
so all in all
the purchase price
 was pretty small.
I bought a single trusting heart,
that gave devotion from the start.
If you think these things are not for sale,
Buy a brown-eyed puppy with a stump for a tail.

The Creation

When God had made the earth and sky
the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals,
the fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished
not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine
and give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide
and everywhere He went,
a little creature followed Him
until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth
and in the sky and sea,
the little creature said, "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."

Kindly, the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
and call you dog.  My friend."

How To Housetrain Your New Puppy

You have just brought your new puppy home; so what now?  You don't want little accidents all over your new carpet, so what do you do?

First, provide a crate in which your puppy can fit comfortably, making sure it is large enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around.  Place several toys inside and feed its meals inside the crate.  Feeding meals inside the crate discourages crate accidents and helps your puppy associate positive things with the crate and to fall in love with its new home.  If you cannot provide a crate, then partition off one part of a room just for the puppy.
Take your puppy out for potty breaks as often as possible, especially after it has eaten or has just awakened after a nap.  Don't leave your puppy in its crate or own space for more than three hours at a time.  If you are going to be away from home for longer, make sure someone will look after the puppy for you.
Teach your puppy the command "go potty" and always praise him when he does it in the correct place - out in the yard.  Never punish your puppy if it has an accident.  Last thing at night, always take him for a walk before settling him down to sleep.
If you use paper to train your puppy, always put it in the same place to start with.  Once it gets the idea that it must only use the paper, gradually move it nearer the door and eventually out into the yard.  Your puppy will soon learn what is expected of him and will start asking to go outside.  Never ignore him if he asks to go out or he will think it is OK to do his business indoors.
